Sustainable Palm Oil

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil, and can be found in everything from snacks to household products and even cosmetics. About 58.84 million tons of palm oil are produced every year, with Indonesia and Malaysia accounting for 85 percent of total global supply.

In brief, sustainable palm oil is a product made under policies that promise no deforestation, no peat development, and no exploitation. Palm oil can be sustainable, but we all have an important role to play to ensure that it becomes the norm. We can start by learning more about the problems, supporting brands that have pledged to become sustainable.

Our Policy Statements

1.0 Introduction

As one of the leading player in palm oil industry, PTSA has a broad business supply chain from procurement of Fresh Fruit Brunch (FFB), manufacturing and trading activities including CPO, PK, RBD Palm Oil, RBD Palm Olein, RBD Palm Stearin and packaging of palm oil downstream products to meet local and export markets demand.

PTSA believes all agricultural supply chain should be environmental sustainable and economically beneficial to our communities. In accordance to the complexity of a global commodity supply chain with a variety of stakeholders, PTSA has strived to develop its policies and operations to meet the highest standards in terms of sustainability, transparency and traceability as our first steps towards producing sustainable palm oil.

2.0 Scope

This policy is adopted and applies to all internal and external operations in the company’s supply chain including FFB suppliers and other suppliers associated with PTSA’s palm oil derivatives.

We expect all of PTSA’s suppliers to adhere to all of the commitments of this policy.

3.0 Commitment

We are committed to providing benefits to society and workplace, promoting positive environmental performance and socio-economic impacts and fully complying with local and international regulations.

3.1 Promoting Human Rights and Workplace.

3.1.1 Respect the rights of indigenous and local communities to give or withhold their Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).

3.1.2 Respect and uphold the rights of all workers, including contract, temporary, and migrant workers in accordance with local and international labor rights and the principles of Free and Fair Labor in palm oil production.

3.1.3 Pay all workers the statutory monthly wage in accordance with current labor regulations and promote a safe and healthy working environment that is free of harassment.

3.1.4 Support the inclusion of smallholders in the palm oil supply chain and help them to comply with our sustainability policy in an open, fairness and transparent manner.

3.2 Positive Environmental performance

3.2.1 No deforestation and development on High Carbon Stock (HCS) forest and High Conversation Value (HCV) areas

3.2.2 No new development on peat land irrespective of depth

3.2.3 Minimize the carbon footprint to reduce Green House Gas emissions in all operations

3.2.4 No burning in new planting, replanting and other developments in all operations

3.2.5 Limit pesticide use in order to protect workers, local communities and the environment from exposure to hazardous chemicals.

3.3 Legal Compliances

3.3.1 Identify and comply with all applicable international and local law and regulations.

3.3.2 Conduct business in a fair and ethical manner to avoid all forms of corruption and bribery. Gift, entertainment or monetary transaction which will create conflict of interest is prohibited to all employees in all operation..

3.3.3 Resolve all complaints, grievances and conflicts through open, transparent and consultation processes.

4.0 Traceability Supply Chains

PTSA top priority is producing sustainable palm oil and ensuring the reliability and quality of our raw materials and end products. Thus it is mandatory to build a traceable supply chains in compliance with our commitments in our Sustainability Policy.

Traceability helps us to identify where our supply chain comes from and enhances our ability to trace the origin of the FFB and other palm oil derivatives supplied to our manufacturing plant.

We are also committed to complying with applicable regulations and requirements, and improving overall performance and developing a quality management system on an ongoing basis.

4.1 Traceability to Mill (TTM)

Traceability to mill is the first step in understanding where our raw materials comes from, increasing transparency and identify potential risks in our supply chain.

In 2019, PTSA has begun to collecting and verifying information about mills supplying to our refineries and we have achieved 100% traceability to mill in the same year. We have practice the same thereon.

For a mill to be considered traceable, all information and data as identified below are documented and verified.

4.2 Traceability to Plantations (TTP)

PTSA is committed to fully traceable and traceable supply chain. TTP is very complex due to the number of agent and independent smallholders involved in the supply chain. However PTSA is committed to reach full traceability by 2020 as we want to know where the Fresh Fruits Bunch (FFB) comes from and whether the oil is produced in sustainable manner so we may guarantee the origin of the raw materials to secure our customers and end consumer concerns.

We hereby state that the company is committed to always producing halal products consistently including consistency in the use and procurement of raw materials, additives and auxiliary materials as well as consistency in the halal production process in accordance with the requirements for the halal certification of LPPOM MUI SU.
